HELMUT SCHNEIDER

Philosopher, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor  

From 1988 to 2003 served as Director of the Hegel Archive. Professor Schneider is the author of three major scholarly discoveries. In 1971, he identified the second edition (1832) of the first volume of Hegel’s Science of Logic. This discovery provided a new textual foundation for the study of Hegel’s Logic. In 1978, Professor Schneider rediscovered the Oldest System Program of German Idealism in Kraków, Poland, a text previously believed to have been lost. This document is of exceptional importance for understanding the subsequent development of German Idealism. Finally, Helmut Schneider is also credited with the discovery and publication of the only extant version of Hegel’s lectures on aesthetics (Winter Semester 1820–1821). This edition significantly corrected earlier publications of Hegel’s aesthetics and provided a more comprehensive understanding of the development of his aesthetic theory during the Berlin period.

Helmut Schneider is the editor and publisher of the well-known Hegel research series Hegeliana and the Hegel Yearbook. In 1999, Professor Schneider submitted and defended his habilitation thesis at the University of Wrocław titled Spirit and History: Studies on Hegel’s Philosophy. He has a strong academic interest in Asian philosophy. In 1991, he founded the Society for the Study of Asian Philosophy, which promotes intercultural philosophical research between European and Asian traditions. Since 2009, Helmut Schneider has been Full Professor at Grigol Robakidze University and Head of the Department of History of Philosophy (with a focus on German Idealism and Aesthetics) at its Institute for Philosophy and Social Sciences.

Since February 1, 2017, he has been Professor of Philosophy at New Georgian University.
